The Fishing

Legendary Louisiana Flats

Our home waters span the coastal marshes and grass flats of south Louisiana, consistently ranked among the finest shallow-water sight-fishing destinations on the Gulf Coast.

Bull Reds, Drum & Sheepshead

Target tailing Redfish, bruising Black Drum, and finicky Sheepshead, many in the 15–30 pound class.

The coastal marshes of south Louisiana are a world apart.  A vast, living maze of grass flats, oyster reefs, and tidal cuts that stretches to the horizon in every direction. These shallow-water environments are among the most productive fisheries in North America, and they are home to three of the most exciting targets in saltwater fly fishing: Redfish, Black Drum, and Sheepshead. When you pole quietly across a flat in a few inches of water and spot a bronze tail waving above the surface, your heart rate will tell you everything you need to know about why anglers travel from across the country for this experience.

Fly fishing Louisiana's flats is pure sight fishing at its finest. You and your guide will spend the day on a shallow-draft skiff, scanning the water for tailing fish, nervous water, and the dark outlines of cruising Redfish pushing through the grass. Casts are often measured in feet, not yards.  A 40-foot shot to a tailing Red in ankle-deep water, with nothing but silence and the soft click of your reel, is as good as it gets. We fish flies that imitate crabs, shrimp, and small baitfish: crab patterns, Clouser Minnows, and weedless shrimp flies are daily staples. The window to make the right presentation and the strip-set that follows are moments you will replay for years.

Beyond the iconic Redfish, our waters hold impressive populations of Black Drum, a bruising, underrated fly rod quarry that can push past 30 pounds.  Sheepshead, the notoriously selective "convict fish" that will humble even experienced anglers before finally coming to hand. Chasing all three species in a single day is entirely possible, and the variety keeps every hour on the water fresh. Louisiana's season runs year-round, with prime sight-fishing conditions from spring through fall and excellent winter fishing for schools of Bull Reds pushing through the cuts. No matter when you come, the marsh will have something to offer.

Getting There

New Orleans is your gateway to Louisiana's legendary coastal fishery. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is served by most major airlines and sits about 30–45 minutes from the heart of the city. From New Orleans, the marsh and coastal flats we fish are easily accessible via a scenic drive south through bayou country that sets the tone for the adventure ahead.

Louisiana's coastal fishing is productive year-round, but fall (October–December) offer the most consistent sight-fishing conditions with milder temperatures.  Winter brings cooler weather and big schools of Bull Redfish that are hard to find anywhere else.

There can be cold fronts in November.  Bring warm clothes in case there is a cold front.  Fishing bibs and rain shell are a must.
